This week I am introducing the concept of sound to my 3rd grade students. In order for them to first get engaged, I am going to use the website: The Sound Site http://www.smm.org/sound/nocss/top.html.
I will play some sounds to have the students try to figure out what object is producing that sound. Following this introduction, I will ask the students why do they think they are able to hear that specific noise. By asking them this question, they will start to brainstorm a hypothesis of what creates sound.
Sara,
ReplyDeleteA very interesting site indeed. I was very intrigued by the soundcard activities. I noticed that you mentioned having the students figure out what is making the sound that you play from the site. I was thinking that it would be a awesome if the students were able to record sounds of their own as well on that site or some other site like audacity and then have their classmates try to guess the source of the sound. You could even make it a game and have students who get the sound source correct win a prize of some sort. Sometimes a fun pack of M&M's is all it takes for optimal performance:)
Mellica,
ReplyDeleteI used this sight with my students yesterday to introduce sound. I only choose 10 sounds that the students tried to figure out the source. I wish I would have read your post prior to me preforming the experiment. Thanks for the input.

Sara,
ReplyDeleteThis was a very interesting website! I see that you have taught this lesson to your student's. How did the lesson go? Did the student's enjoy the web-site?
Toni,
ReplyDeleteThis was a great way for me to introduce the concept of sound. My students, who tend to be a bit chatty, actually were quiet because they wanted to hear what to guess the sound. Overall, I think it is a site that I will use again.
